What is Mindfulness?
I briefly mentioned mindfulness in a previous post and I thought today would be a good day to go deeper into what it all means.
Mindfulness is defined as the ability to be aware, to be present and to be conscious of what we’re doing. It is in many ways the opposite of being reactive or being overwhelmed to the point of inaction.
Mindfulness is not a skill that every one of us has access to. And like any skill, Mindfulness requires us to learn how to use it and when to use it.
Now you might be wondering. “Okay, mindfulness sounds all nice and dandy; but what does it give me?” Patience, my dear. Because after I’m done telling you about the power of mindfulness, you may find yourself not willing to go back to the person you were before 🙂
Useful Mindfulness Practices
Some people are naturally gifted at mindfulness; it may be because of upbringing or who they are as an individual. Despite that fact, I still think looking at different mindfulness techniques/strategies is very beneficial.
After all, when it comes to life, we are never done learning.
1) Check in with yourself
It doesn’t matter if you’ve just woken up or you’re about to sleep. Ask yourself all the questions you need to ask and answer yourself honestly. This helps you sort out your emotions and feelings, and it can even help you notice something you have been choosing to ignore.
I often like to check in with myself at least three times a day. First, in the morning, second in the afternoon and third in the evening.
I ask myself how I’m feeling, what my plan is for the day, and who I want to talk to, for example. Sometimes I add an extra check-in if I’m feeling extra adventurous.
The point is to connect with yourself. To learn your strengths and weaknesses. Because once you know what you’re struggling with it becomes easier to address the problem.

2) Mindfulness and Good Food
Food is nice. I’ll be one of many to tell you that.
But have you ever noticed how many people just eat (even their favorite food) and don’t savor it?
Why not take a breath between bites, really soak in the experience, you know? It’s an amazing feeling when you’re eating something delicious and you just listen to your body responding and your taste buds tingling. This may make you appreciate the food you enjoy even more as you take it all in.
Forget about work, forget about John and his insensitive jokes. Focus on you and what you’re eating.
I know it sounds crazy, but it’s also amazing. I often tell people that caring what others think of you is an enemy of mindfulness. We live for our own development ladies, not to live based on someone else’s standards.
3) The Mindful Pause
“It’s not an argument if only one person is involved”
So you’re having a heated debate with someone; they can’t seem to understand what you’re saying even though you’re right.
How bout just taking the moment to Pause.
Look at what is going on. Analyse what your opponent is saying. Ask yourself,
“Is this really worth my time?”
“What will I lose from just leaving them be?”
Sometimes we get so caught up in proving or point that we forget there is more to the world around us. Instead of us getting sucked into someone elses confusion, we should do what we can for them. If that doesn’t work, we continue on our journey.
It’s good to help others; but not when it comes at the cost of your sanity.
Pause, Breathe and let go.

Mindfulness is a superpower. It helps us know ourselves on a deeper level.
When we now understand ourselves (strengths and weaknesses) noone can use that against us. It’s even better because we begin to accept ourselves without needing validation from others.
And let me tell you, there’s nothing more amazing than to be surrounded by people like this. People who know what they want, who know their fears and strengths. People who love and respect others for who they are. Authentic people.
Tell me, who would you rather partner up with (business-wise)? A person who always complains and sees failure at every opportunity. Or someone willing to learn and take on new challenges even when they aren’t sure they’ll come out on top.
I know what I’d choose.
Mindful people, any day.
“Your vibe attracts your tribe” — this is true. And it’s also true that this is where most of the power of mindfulness lies.
Let’s be mindful ladies.
